NYPC Meeting Notes March 20, 2007 - Vista
David Pogue - Missing
Manuel Series
- 5 Years development - Original Code Name - Longhorn
- 15,000,000 or so lines of code
- Vista Programmers were allowed to blog to the outside world
- MS Cleaned house - dump lots of "do nothing items"
- Limits menus to 20 items
- Only 5% upgrade OS - 95% put new OS on their next computer
- 32 Bit version Max memory barrier - invest in 64 bit version (my
opinion)
- System Utilities are toast
- HP not supporting (writing Vista drivers) for a lot of "older"
hardware!
Protection
- Everyone has "Standard Accounts",
- When a change to the system is requested, the system will ask for
the Administrator Password (Screen goes dark, box appears)
- Novices think it's "too much"
- Most XP users are set up as administrators (should be users
and Log
Into Administrator account (too cumbersome))
- Shuns other computers which have out of date virus definitions!
- NTFS only!
Other Features
- Voice
Recognition built in - not quite as good as Dragon (no voice
macros), but will hurt their business
- Mousless
Maneuvering - Uses Tic Tac Toe
gridding to zoom in on icon (using
3 numbers) or pixel (using 4
numbers) location
Virus Info
- Usual Virus life
- Security Patch Released
- Patch reverse engineered / disassembled as to see what the
security hole is
- Virus written and released
- Virus hits machines before the patch does
- The above cycle is about 1 week on average
